Philadelphia has a particular penchant for performing arts, with the city’s neighbourhoods showcasing some of the world’s most famous musicians, as well as being home to a vast array of classical groups, including Opera Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Orchestra.
This Autumn, those looking for their daily dose of culture can dip their toes into Philadelphia’s performing arts with a virtual night at the opera courtesy of the new Opera Philadelphia Channel. Classical music lovers can also watch The Philadelphia Orchestra return to the digital stage for a reimagined season under the theme of ‘Our World NOW’, in the comfort of their own homes.
Opera Philadelphia Channel Launches This Autumn
Noted as “one of the most creative and ambitious companies” in the U.S according to the New York Times, Opera Philadelphia is offering virtual travellers the chance to experience the wonders of opera first-hand this autumn with the launch of the Opera Philadelphia Channel.
The Channel will bring a full season into opera lover’s homes via their television screens and streaming devices, mixing both a traditional and new repertoire to engage its global audience with emotive performances. This is opera reimagined for the screen, with star-studded performances, beloved classics, and a series of all new commissions from visionary composers.
Friends of the opera will be able to enjoy new presentations of David T. Little’s Soldier Songs and Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarrón; performances starring tenor Lawrence Brownlee, including Cycles of My Being by Composer in Residence Tyshawn Sorey; and the digital premiere of 2015’s La traviata starring soprano Lisette Oropesa.

‘Our World NOW’: The Philadelphia Orchestra Return to the Stage for Reimagined Autumn 2020 Season
The Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the world’s greatest classical music organisations, promises sweet symphonies in the ear of all viewers as it returns to the stage to begin its transformed autumn season next month. Promoting health and safety is its top priority and weekly performances will presented on the Orchestra’s Digital Stage at www.philorch.org to bring music to audiences worldwide.
Launching with the Opening Night Celebration Concert on 30th September 2020, The Philadelphia Orchestra will offer a new standard in the orchestral digital experience for viewers tuning in from far and wide. Featuring a performance by acclaimed soprano Angel Blue and a remote performance by infamous pianist Lang Lang, the exceptional fundraising concert will also include a special performance of Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, the Orchestra’s commissioned anthem in response to COVID-19.
The Philadelphia Orchestra’s season theme, Our World NOW, will showcase music that reflects and responds to this moment in time. The Orchestra will perform recent works by Composer-in-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank, Valerie Coleman, Vivian Fung, Missy Mazzoli, and Jessie Montgomery, in addition to rescheduled premieres by Jessica Hunt and Carlos Simon. Classical musical fanatics will also be pleased to know works from the ensemble’s well-known repertoire, including pieces by Beethoven, Copland, Mahler, Mozart, and Vivaldi are slated to be presented.

Weekly small ensemble performances from locations throughout Philadelphia will also be made available to audiences for free, whilst subscription packages and single tickets to the Digital Stage will be available for purchase on 10th September 2020 at 17:00 pm BST, starting from £11.43 ($15).
