With the Edinburgh Festival Fringe coming to a close, Philadelphia CVB is encouraging UK travellers with a passion for performance art to head to the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ this September for its very own Fringe Festival showcasing local, national and international artists as well as ground-breaking world premieres.
Every September since 1997, FringeArts hosts a 17-day Fringe Festival throughout the city to celebrate the innovation and creativity in contemporary performance and to promote Philadelphia’s vibrant arts community.
This year, from 6th – 23rd September 2018, visitors at Philadelphia’s Fringe Festival can choose from more than 1,000 curated and artistically-daring performances, including Le Super Grand Continental by Sylvain Émard, which will see hundreds of performers join together outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Travellers can also enjoy hearing a 3,000-pipe organ play during In Plain Air at the International Contemporary Ensemble at Christ Church Campus and spectate the unusual manger by Boris Charmatz.
Further information on three performances taking place during 2018 Fringe Festival is below:
Le Super Grand Continental by Sylvain Émard at Philadelphia Museum of Art
Hundreds of performers from all ages and dance backgrounds will come together during Le Super Grand Continental at the front steps of the iconic Philadelphia Museum of Art. Choreographed by Motreal-based Sylvain Émard, the synchronised and large-scale performance will combine the pure delight of line dancing and the fluidity of contemporary dance. After each show, the audience will be invited to join dancers when the area becomes an open-air dance floor. Le Super Grand Continental is free to attend and will take place on Saturday 8th September 2018 at 4:00pm and 8:00pm and on Sunday 9th September 2018 at 4:00pm. For more information, visit www.fringearts.com/event/le-super-grand-continental/.
In Plain Air by the International Contemporary Ensemble at Christ Church Campus
During In Plain Air, composers Phyllis Chen, who is known for her work with hand-wound music boxes and toy pianos, and Nathan Davis, a percussionist fascinated by the mechanics of instruments, will immerse themselves in the sound-making possibilities of the church’s bells and 3,000-pipe organ. Chen and Davis are both members of acclaimed artist collective International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), which is made up of 35 members who are soloists, chamber musicians, commissioners and collaborators. Performances for In Plain Air are scheduled for 1:00pm, 3:30pm and 6:00pm on 22nd September 2018 and at 3:30pm and 6:00pm on 23rd September 2018. Entry is complimentary, but limited seating is available. Guaranteed seats are available from £1.55 ($2) for advanced reservations. For more information, visit www.fringearts.com/event/in-plain-air/.
manger by Boris Charmatz and in Partnership with Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design
As part of the Philadelphia Museum of Dance and in partnership with Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, French choreographer Boris Charmatz’ manger will implore audiences to examine the nature of eating, of digesting information and of consuming. Charmatz believes that mouths are the crossroads for the inside and the outside and in manger (French for ‘to eat’), dancers will chew through reams of paper to taste, swallow, sing, and eat. manger will be performed at FringeArts on North Columbus Boulevard at 8:00pm on 22nd September and 23rd September 2018. Tickets cost £27 ($35) for non-members and £12 ($15) for students and those aged 25 and under. For more information, visit www.fringearts.com/event/manger/.
